The man-made Brighton Marina is one of the most popular and well-known parts of Brighton. Covering 127 acres, it serves as much more than just a place for boats to dock. Since its inception in the late 1970s, it has gradually been developed into one of the town’s top spots for entertainment and dining.
In addition to the large ASDA supermarket at its core, the marina boasts two separate shopping arcades featuring a number of interesting boutique-style stores along with several restaurants and bars. The waterfront shopping provides outstanding scenery to match the range of items for sale on hand.
With more than a dozen eating venues to choose from right at the marina, you can always find something to suit your tastes. From the fast food of McDonalds to the trendy Lloyd’s Number One Bar and Grill, this is where many people come to enjoy a meal on the waterfront. The Pagoda is one of the more interesting dining options here, with its floating boat-style restaurants serving up Chinese food.
When evening arrives, you may consider trying your luck in the Rendezvous Casino, located right in the middle of the marina’s retail complex. It is open to the public if you arrange to become a member, which is free. The 26 lanes at Bowlplex are another popular place to spend an evening. There are pool tables and a video arcade here as well to round off the entertainment options.
CineWorld Cinema has a branch at the Brighton Marina, featuring eight screens that show the latest movies. If you feel the need for a bit of exercise, the David Lloyd Health and Fitness Centre is happy to give you a workout. Their fitness centre and pool are top-class, and visitors can use the facilities for a reasonable daily fee.
Being a marina, this is the best place in Brighton to arrange an afternoon on the sea. Champagne Charters is just one of the companies that offer boats for hire, both captained vessels and self-drive boats. Pleasure Boats focuses more on tours, featuring a range of fun trips, from coastal cruises to day-long deep sea fishing expeditions.
Getting to the marina is a breeze thanks to the frequent bus service and ease of taxis from the centre of Brighton. If you are driving, you’ll be happy to know there is a huge multi-storey car park at the marina that is free. There is one hotel located within the marina complex for those who just can’t get enough of the classic yachting atmosphere.
Most visitors to Brighton prefer to stay in the town centre, where the bulk of the accommodation and amenities are found but there’s also the Hotel Seattle located in the Marina complex – this modern 4 star hotel is ranked as one of the best hotels in Brighton and is a great choice for anyone attending events or visiting friends at the Marina, or who would just rather be that littel way out of Town . The marina lies at the southern edge of the town, so it’s not too far from the centre of Brighton to walk to (a comfortable 30-45 minute stroll, very pleasant on a nice day, horrible in the rain!). The seafront promenade runs almost to the edge of the marina, so its also possible to take the promenade train or ride a bike to the marina area.
