Our The Grand Hotel Brighton Review:

Visitors to the south-coast city of Brighton will be rewarded with Victorian-style charm if they choose to stay in the magnificent Grand Hotel Brighton. First built in 1864, this once luxurious residence has been welcoming guests since Brighton first started to become popular as an English Rivera tourist destination.

The hotel, which was originally famed for its billiards room, ballroom and lift, was unfortunately bombed by the IRA in 1984 after the Tories decided to make it the venue for their party conference. A failed assassination attempt on the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher resulted in a rebuilding programme, and The Grand has since been restored to its former Victorian glory.

It reopened in 1986 and is now under the management of the De Vere Group. The building contains 201 Classic and Deluxe rooms as well as a number of spacious suites. Amenities in the guest rooms are as one would expect from a four-star residence and include en suite bathrooms, access to the internet and comfortable, Egyptian cotton bedding. Yet guests seeking a real luxury experience may be disappointed with the dated feel of the place.

Fine dining is to be found in the King’s Restaurant, which specialises in sourcing fresh regional produce for its primarily British dishes. The dining room is a balance of traditional – including exquisite chandeliers – and modern architecture, and provides superb views of the beach and the sea. The Victoria Bar and Terrace provides lighter meals as well as traditional Sussex cream teas and is open to guests around the clock.

The Grand is situated directly on the seafront, close to the heart of the city. Theatres, restaurants and venues where visitors can enjoy the legendary Brighton nightlife are all within easy walking distance, and Brighton’s promenade is literally on the doorstep. The Lanes, featuring caf?s, antique shops and boutiques, is also nearby.

Although the Grand Hotel Brighton’s full selection of leisure facilities is currently undergoing renovation, there is a well-equipped gym, and guests are invited to order a range of therapy treatments in the privacy and comfort of their rooms. The hotel is a popular venue for weddings and offers a full service to those wishing for opulence on their big day, including the arrangement of horse-draw carriages and classic cars.

Business visitors wishing to organise conferences or meetings with a touch of style have a choice of a number of rooms, all equipped with the latest facilities including projectors, large screens and internet access. Packages include a range of meals and refreshments provided by the hotel.

Brighton is well known for its wide choice of entertainments. Shoppers will not be disappointed by the nearby Churchill Square shopping area, which is situated a five-minute stroll away, to the rear of the hotel. The Brighton Racecourse, less than two miles away, holds top-class events along with fine views out over the sea. Yellowave Beach Sports is a permanent venue for those interested in activity along the water’s edge.

The Grand Hotel Brighton may not offer the lowest room rates, but for visitors looking for history as well as Victorian seaside charm, it is one of the best choices. It doesn’t offer the grand experience of its opening days, but this step-back in time is a fantastic choice for a unique British seaside getaway.
